TERRYS BRIDGE OF HOPE 2005

When in Nairobi in June 2005 I was approached by a lady called Leah Lambwya about the possibility of funding the setting up of an orphanage in an area called Machakos which is one and a half hours drive from Nairobi.I visited the area and spoke with members of the local community and some of the children that it was proposed would be housed in the orphanage.I was brought to visit an ald un-used two roomed house which it was proposed would be refurbished, each room was 12ft by 12ft.The house was situated on 2 acres of ground.

After hearing the plight of the children and seeing the potential the house and land had I decided that the project was a worthwhile one.The house was purchased and renovated. The orphanage was set up to accommodate twelve children but that number quickly increased to over thirty. The orphanage grows all its own vegetables on the land and also has some sheep, cattle, goats and hens.

The work on the orphanage was done entirely by local labour and was funded by money raised by Kenya Build volunteers.

IT WAS DECIDED TO CALL THE ORPHANAGE “ TERRYS BRIDGE OF HOPE”IN MEMORY OF A GIRL WHO DIED OF AIDS.SHE DID NOT TELL ANYONE SHE HAD AIDS UNTIL THE DAY BEFORE SHE DIED.
