Kenya Build 2007

New facilities at St Pauls

Cheryls is situated at Dagoretti corner just outside Nairobi. I visited there in late 2006 as part of a fact finding trip to Nairobi. The home accommodated sixty five children in two dormitories each with two rooms, each room 14ft by 14ft and sleeping sixteen children. The buildings were of wooden frame and galvanised structure and were in a bad state of dis-repair.Also in the compound was a room 20ft by 20ft in which five classes were being taught.Again it was felt that the best way forward was to build completely new buildings. There was so much work to be done it would have to be done in phases over a couple of years.

With this in mind I got a group of 11 volunteers together in January 2007 to start the work which was going to be the building of a new girls dormitory and two new classrooms. The buildings were to be built in blockwork. The work commenced on site in February with local labour bringing the buildings to ring beam level. The girls dormitory would have six rooms, toilets and shower facilities.

The Kenya Build volunteers spent one week on site in June and in the week they were there they put on the roofs, fitted the windows and doors and the electrical, plumbing and plastering had begun. The project was then completed by local labour, with the dormitory and classrooms being occupied in September.

All the work was funded by money raised by Kenya build volunteers.
